"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is a narrative poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797-1798. It tells the story of an old mariner who stops a wedding guest on his way to the celebration and begins to recount his experiences at sea.

The poem is divided into seven parts, each depicting a different stage of the mariner's journey. It begins with the mariner stopping a wedding guest and compelling him to listen to his story. The mariner recounts how his ship was caught in the grips of a fierce storm and how they encountered the albatross, which was seen as a good omen. However, the mariner inexplicably shoots and kills the bird, bringing a curse upon himself and his crewmates.

The poem begins with the mariner describing how his ship, along with its crew, was caught in a storm and forced towards the South Pole. In the midst of the storm, an albatross appears and leads them out of danger. However, the mariner, for no apparent reason, irrationally shoots and kills the bird.

As a consequence, the ship becomes stuck in the doldrums – a state of motionlessness with no wind. The crew members blame the mariner for their predicament and hang the dead albatross around his neck as a symbol of their curse. The mariner is overcome with guilt and starts to suffer from a curse, causing all of his companions to die one by one.

Amidst his suffering, the mariner notices the beauty of the surrounding nature, particularly the water snakes that appear. He eventually learns to appreciate the beauty of God's creation and sees the albatross as a symbol of divine grace. This realization provides him with some relief.

Towards the end of the poem, the mariner is saved by a ghostly ship, crewed by Death and Life-in-Death. They roll dice for the souls of the crew members, and the mariner becomes the winner, while the rest of the crew's souls are condemned. The mariner is then forced to wander the earth and tell his tale as a penance for his killing of the albatross.

"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" explores various themes such as sin, guilt, redemption, the power of nature, and the significance of respect for God's creations. It is known for its vivid imagery, rhythmic storytelling, and symbolism. Coleridge's work has had a lasting impact on English literature and is considered one of the greatest narrative poems of all time.

"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is revered for its lyrical language, vivid imagery, and its exploration of profound spiritual and moral themes.
